  GLAWS* PRESENTS CAREER CRACKING SEMINAR

FINDING AND USING YOUR UNIQUE VOICE
How Your Unique Voice and POV Can Help You Create a Successful Career

June 18th – Los Angeles

(#1522) Devo Cutler-Rubenstein

http://www.wcwriters.com/aglawc/program.html

When you read it you know what it is – great writing.  Whether the work is books, theatre, poetry, music lyrics, television or film, a writer must provide his or her own driving truth under the words that instantly hooks. It’s instantly compelling, inviting and distinct. That is great writing.

Despite vast divides in style and genre, all writers who are successful have developed their own point of view, a world readers can dive into feeling like your book is their new best friend.  How do we create the immediacy, intimacy, pace and distinct rhythms that draw in our readers, who invariably want more of what we are on the page?

This seminar delves into how the crafting of your words informs; it helps you gain a dynamic (and practical) understanding of why you are special and only you can write what you write.

Agents, managers, publishers, and the entertainment world often speak about that one new voice that ignites the marketplace with a unique vision of humanity and/or our world.  We’ll look at how voice plays out in all formats.  Whether you write one-person shows, non-fiction books on math or infuse your fictional characters with madness, this seminar will definitely give you a leg (and a pen up). This instructor’s proven transformational tools have helped numerous writers win recognition with their work, and the instructor will help you SEE what you have to offer in a way you have not ever seen your work (or you) before.

  2016 SUMMER BLOG

 "SCHOOL IS COOL"

We never stop learning, but sometimes we need to push the envelope.  You know how a plant grows new leaves when the ugly, congested undergrowth is cut away.  That’s what throwing ourselves into an unknown does for us as creators.

Never stop learning.

I found this “School is Cool” note crumbled up on the floor of one of my college classrooms after teaching a class on writing short films.  It made me seriously smile, and it reminded me that our lifetime is a journey of learning.  The more I am open to learn, the more curious I am, and the more joy I feel.  I know we’ve all had those scarring experiences, with teachers or students we’ve encountered.  Unless we can quickly bounce back from those wounding moments, we deny ourselves the pure joy of leaning something new about life and/or ourselves.  I challenge you this summer to take a class in something you have always wanted but were either too busy or shy to persue.  Try improvisation; it’s a safe place if you have a great teacher. Improv is a wonderful place to start the spark of creativity.  I suggest Aretha Sills, Spolin Theatre Games Workshops in Los Angeles, or their weeklong intensive workshops in Wisconsin. I’ve done both and truly had some of the best times of my life.  AND -- You do not have to be an actor.  These childhood games and theatre-game workouts are tailored for adults and ignite creativity in a safe environment.

A new character-writer relationship based process for writing compelling, multi-dimensional characters is about to be published, through Stairway press, in Fall, 2016.

Written by a literary manager, a manager/producer and a former studio exec-writer-producer, this book helps writers gain insights and tools for better writing and success at the writing game!

My husband (writer/educator) and I were in South Africa in 2013. While there we witnessed a new urban housing idea in progress, to provide more affordable housing for university students. Here is the student housing project completed. Pictured above is Mill Junction, Johannesburg: before in 2013 and now completed in 2015. It is constructed out of two former grain silos topped with four floors of colorful shipping containers. The complex offers hundreds of local university students quality, reasonably-priced living quarters. Ecology rocks. Helping students rocks.

Send me your links to fabulous ecological finds for a free fifteen minute consult!!

Enjoy! Keep writing!!
